This is my first speaking engagement on Innovation and I am very excited about it and I hoped that I was able to be at least useful to most of the audience who attended the talk.

below is the presentation I did for The Big Camp sponsored by the BAC and Ayala TBI

Yesterday December 5, 2009 I was invited to TEDxManila (woot) at the UP College of Law by the awesome Mark Ruiz. Unfortunately, or should I say naturally, I wasn’t on the list despite confirming twice so I had to wait for Sir Rommel, one of the organizers, to hear my plea and let me in. Of course it helped that the Awesome Mark Ruiz was the one who invited me I got in, but since I wasn’t on the list I didn’t get a pin or nametag….which I wanted to have..fortunately for me Reese Fernandez of Rags2Riches gave me hers. THANK YOU REESE !

My seatmates Reese Fernandez of R2R, Zara Perez of Starbucks and Brian Ong my XS Batchmate and I am so lucky to be beside agents of change here in our country.

The hostess reminded me of someone …but can’t remember ..too bad I didn’t take pictures of the commercials which would have killed Jason who was in front of me hahaha.

The first talk was by Atty. Oposa who talked about LAW, not law law but LAW as in Land, Air and Water. And how we are pretty much destroying the work of nature in far less time that it took her to build it.

“We should only use the interest not the principal” – Atty Oposa.

The 2nd talk was by the ever awesome Mark Ruiz who I think never slept that much the past week O.o He talked about social entrepreneurship and how it could scale up to some thing massive. Small is truly the new big.

Find out more about Mark at ruizmark.com

Edu20.org founder Graham Glass then took the podium talking about the future of learning. One of the most interesting things he showed is gaming to learn. I have been a gamer all my life and so are my siblings and to be honest playing Red Alert allowed me to learn strategy and complex math more than school. Games like Halo thought me more high school science than my science teacher, I knew what plasma is before it was taught in school as the special 4th state of matter. I think gaming to learn would be the natural evolution of schooling. What I am worried about is the social aspect of learning, the importance of classmates often trump the importance of the subject matter. I mean who remembers the 5th day of Science Class on Grade 5 ? but do I remember the day when I became the butt of all jokes of the class.

Find out more about edu20.org at http://www.edu20.org

a special talk by Maria Tan of Eskwela followed and all I can say is that despite all the limited resources she has (in government) she rocks the country hard. Eskwela is a beacon of hope in the country where sometimes it is hard to find hope outside the boxing ring. People are changing the world and in TEDxManila everyone there was changing the world, so why be so down ? There are lots of beacons of hope when you just look.

Find out more about eskwela at : http://eskwela.wikispaces.com/

The last talk was given by Iliac Diaz of MyShelter and this talk was full of one liner quotable quotes ! I’m so glad that there is someone working on disaster mitigation rather than disaster relief effort. Our country is now experiencing climate change and adaptation not rock concerts is the answer to it.

Find out : http://www.philippineclimatechallenge.org/

After the talks we had cocktails and met the most amazing group of people like these bunch :

I do believe that TEDxManila had the highest number of change agents per square foot in the entire country and I do believe that new ideas, new projects and kickass innovation was born in this event so I look forward to more kickass stuff in the Philippines !

The main reason why IsangConcepts exists is because we want to be agents of change focusing on Philippine Innovation as our battle ground.

Last November 28, 2009 the IsangConcepts team performed an ARK (Acts of Random Kindness) around Ayala Heights because. yeah Because hahaha

ARK (Acts of Random Kindness) is actually a clothing company in the United Kingdom, Ireland to be precise. visit them at www.arkhq.com and add them to facebook. Most importantly spread some love around !

Here are some pictures:

a bad idea*

All you need is some old board, spray pain, a few packs of marshmallows and maybe an hour of free time and BAM ! you can now go ARKing !

Sometimes ……

We also noticed that Matthew Cua goes crazy upon smelling spray paint, must be some kind of chemist thingy.

Drive-by Marshmallow ATTACK !!!

Slide-by MarshMallow Attack !

We just attacked people walking around, giving them marshmallows. Most enjoyed it, quite a few decided that accepting marshmallows from strangers is evil XD It is also too random too for them.

Finally Free Marshmallows may mean Free Parking. hehehe

ARK ON !

Admittedly, this should have been posted eons ago, I read this book nearly 2 years ago as I was investigating the effects of Capitalism on the Philippines. It wasn’t pretty, in fact once you read other books by John Perkins, your image of Capitalism, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund like mine would change drastically.

One of the chapters in the book “A Game as Old as Empire” was about the Philippines and how the World Bank, and the American Chamber of Commerce backed Marcos up in order to basically strip the Philippines of her resources. I always wondered why the Philippines had no heavy industries and well, this book has shown me why we didn’t.

The Marcos Regime had a dark economic secret, which I think should be shared to everyone.

Below is my report on it last semester as part of the Innovation and Technology Class.

Philippines and the Race to the Bottom

Welcome to the groundswell, the people power revolution that toppling nearly everything we know.

Groundswell is another product of democracy but this time not in the arena of politics but in business, the power is now in the consumers not anymore the producers and the large companies.

Today, a good product isn’t enough, a great marketing gimmick isn’t enough, even a large war chest doesn’t lead to success (Look at Vista). What is the secret to a great product ? Looking at the current list of the top and most successful products they are all beautifully designed, they are all elegant.

Take for example Google’s homepage, there is just search nothing more (which is a way different from Yahoo), the page looks clean as opposed to the clutter of Yahoo’s homepage. If one word can sum up Google’s homepage it is elegance. There is nothing more, nothing less, in fact when you are new to Google (or the first time you used it) you may have thought that it hasn’t fully loaded yet (which in fact a lot of people thought). Despite being a multi-billion dollar company (possibly pushing the trillion mark soon) the homepage looks so empty…..that is where Matthew May’s subtitle comes in, it seems that elegance have something missing or is seemingly missing something.

http://www.leanblog.org/2009/05/leanblog-podcast-67-matt-may-in-pursuit.html

Above is a short 9 minute audio interview with Matthew May that is really worth listening too. Matthew May explains the basics of elegance and some examples of elegance.

Ateneo Innovation Center : In Pursuit of Elegance

Disruptive Innovation is arguably the most important theory in Innovation that every single person interested in Innovation should understand.

Despite being coined more than a decade ago, it has not yet fully entered the mainstream. Disruptive Innovation explains why and how excellently managed companies can be ruined precisely because of the principles of good management.

If there is one concept that I believe everyone should understand it is this. Mark Ruiz, (www.ruizmark.com) taught me “Innovate or Die” and this concept precisely shows you why. If you don’t understand this concept some will and will carve a bullet with your company’s name on it.

Any good management student should understand this phenomenon in order to preform and do the best thing for the company despite that it seems counter-intuitive.

Below is a short PDF on the basics of Disruptive Innovation (in Scribd, those using Google Reader please go to the webpage itself since scribed won’t show it there).

Ateneo Innovation Center Book Review : Disruptive Innovation by Chris Anderson

FREE is so prevalent today, in fact one of the companies I started was based on FREE (Free Love Philippines : Free Photocopying) you can find out more in springwise and in the PDF we made for FREE on how to create your own FREE PHOTOCOPYING business or event (see our manifestos). Google Search is Free and so is Google Docs, Google Maps, Google Earth (hell everything that Google provides is usually free). Facebook, Multiply, Linkedin is also Free there is no subscription fees or membership fees like golf clubs. The thing is that these companies earn tons and tons of money, Google = GOD already for some of us.

Here in this short PDF I try to explain how Free works, and why it is important. The Audiobook of Free is still Free the last time I checked but the ebook isn’t anymore, fortunately, the book is available in nearly all bookstores nationwide (even worldwide).

Again this is FREE to download and share.
